The Story Behind Marlar Studio

In the summer of 1976, America’s Bicentennial, my father used an industrial metal barrel as a time capsule. He filled it, soldered it shut, and stored it in our basement. He told us, his children, to open it in fifty years.

For forty-two years the barrel was in that basement, then was moved to a sibling’s home. Throughout those years, we knew it existed, but rarely thought about it. Careers, marriages, children, and grandchildren filled the years between.

As 2026 approached, we realized that fifty years was finally up! We began planning to gather as a family and open the barrel together.

Preparing for that moment led me to an unexpected realization.

More than twenty-five years earlier, I had discovered a love for capturing everyday life through storytelling, photography, journaling, and writing. I wrote articles encouraging people to record family stories before they were forgotten and spent years documenting the ordinary moments that so often become the most meaningful memories.

Only recently did I connect those two parts of my life.

The time capsule wasn’t simply preserving the past. It represented something I’d been exploring for years: the idea that today’s ordinary moments become tomorrow’s treasures.

That is the foundation of Marlar Studio.

Today, I create books that help families capture stories, preserve memories, and recognize the value of ordinary life before time quietly changes it. I also create Catholic books that help children and families grow in faith, because those moments become part of the stories we pass from one generation to the next.

The greatest gift my father gave us wasn’t what he placed inside the barrel. It was inspiring us to look at today through the eyes of tomorrow.
